Multiple magnets can attract one another from different parts of the gastrointestinal tract to cause obstruction, fistulation or perforation. The incidence of paediatric magnet ingestions appears to be increasing. In response to this hazard, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Best Practice Guidelines were published in 2021 to provide management recommendations for children presenting to the emergency department after ingesting strong magnets. In order to evaluate the adherence of these guidelines in clinical practice we audited the guidelines using a national dataset from a prospective observational study of paediatric magnet ingestion. Eight audit standards were derived from the RCEM Best Practice Guideline for the purposes of this study. date: 2025-01-09 date_type: published publisher: BMJ PUBLISHING GROUP official_url: https://doi.org/10.1136/archdischild-2024-327729 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2352892 doi: 10.1136/archdischild-2024-327729 medium: Print-Electronic pii: archdischild-2024-327729 lyricists_name: Neville, Jonathan lyricists_id: JNEVI12 actors_name: Neville, Jonathan actors_id: JNEVI12 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Archives of Disease in Childhood pages: 2 event_location: England issn: 0003-9888 citation: Schaffer, Sierra; Neville, Jonathan J; Hall, Nigel J; (2025) Full-cycle audit of the RCEM Best Practice Guidelines for the ingestion of super strong magnets in children using data from a UK prospective observational study.
