Younger generations in China, for example, have developed a growing appetite for knowledge-rich audiovisual productions such as factual documentaries. Many are drawn on Bilibili.com, China’s most popular video-streaming platform among young people, due to its danmu culture which sets it apart from more conventional, mainstream outlets. This chapter provides an overview of the transition of documentaries from a traditional TV genre to a vital pillar of danmu-themed online media platforms in China. It explores how danmu’s affective impact revolutionises the online documentary viewing experience, particularly by actively contributing to humour, fostering emotional bonds, and enhancing the sharing of factual information and knowledge. Thanks to danmu, viewers can now enjoy documentaries in a more dynamic and engaging way, benefiting from additional insights, a sense of companionship and a welcoming space where to share their thoughts, feelings and emotions. date: 2025-02-11 date_type: published publisher: Routledge official_url: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003475422-3 full_text_type: other language: eng verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2352986 doi: 10.4324/9781003475422-3 isbn_13: 9781003475422 lyricists_name: Diaz-Cintas, Jorge lyricists_id: JDAAZ03 actors_name: Diaz-Cintas, Jorge actors_name: Allington-Smith, Dominic actors_id: JDAAZ03 actors_id: DAALL44 actors_role: owner actors_role: impersonator full_text_status: restricted place_of_pub: New York, NY, USA book_title: Danmu-Mediated Communication and Audiovisual Translation in the Digital Age editors_name: Lu, Sijing editors_name: Lu, Siwen editors_name: Liang, Lisi citation: Liang, Shiqing; Díaz-Cintas, Jorge; (2025) Happy Together in Cyberspace: Danmu's Affective Impact on Documentary Viewing Experience.
