abstract: In recent decades, the proliferation and advancement of digital technologies and streaming platforms have fuelled an increased demand for more diverse audiovisual content. Younger generations in China, for example, have developed a growing appetite for knowledge-rich audiovisual productions such as factual documentaries. Many are drawn

on Bilibili.com, China’s most popular video-streaming platform among young people, due to its danmu culture which sets it apart from more conventional, mainstream outlets. This chapter provides an overview of the transition of documentaries from a traditional TV genre to a vital pillar of danmu-themed online media platforms in China. It explores how danmu’s affective impact revolutionises the online documentary viewing experience, particularly by actively contributing to humour, fostering emotional bonds, and enhancing the sharing of factual information and knowledge. Thanks to danmu, viewers can now enjoy documentaries in a more dynamic and engaging way, benefiting from additional insights, a sense of companionship and a welcoming space where to share their thoughts, feelings and emotions.
