While previous migrants were\r\npredominantly young, single males, post-2004\r\nmigration comprised Polish families, often coming\r\nwith children. Yet where once the father was seen as\r\nresponsible for making the initial move to migrate, it\r\nis increasingly the mother who is taking this step, with\r\nthe father remaining in Poland.\r\nThis was a pattern which emerged from my doctoral\r\nstudy investigating the experiences of Polish-born\r\nadolescents living in the UK, where several of the\r\nyoung people interviewed had divorced parents, and\r\nin the case of two of them, their fathers had remained\r\nin Poland. This paper examines the narratives of these\r\ntwo adolescents and explores the challenges\r\nhighlighted by their stories. One is the limited amount\r\nof time the children can spend with their fathers, and\r\nthe subsequent impact on their relationship,\r\nsomething which may be further impacted by possible\r\nBrexit regulations on mobility. A second issue is that\r\nwhile English is becoming the adolescents’ main\r\nlanguage, neither fathers speak the language. This\r\nfurther affects interaction between these children and\r\ntheir fathers. I suggest that such issues may influence\r\nthe way these adolescents negotiate their relationship\r\nnot only with their fathers, but with Poland.
