N2 - This essay explores how an experimental documentary film that explores the previously lives of the UK?s overseas Chinese community, can question on the watching relationship enriched using video camera and large-format camera. "The People Watching" (2023) serves as a compelling case study. The film collaborates with a young Chinese photographer using a large-format camera, transforming the meticulous portrait-capturing process into a pivotal element that establishes a sense of "to-be-seenness (Vasudevan 2010:43)" for overseas Chinese individuals often relegated to the margins. The film aspires to spark broader reflection on the nature of identity and its transformation for those navigating the periphery of society. By providing a platform for previously unheard voices within the overseas Chinese community, the film invites viewers to not just watch, but to truly "see" these individuals and their stories.
