Typically, such sensors rely on optically resonant structures, such as Fabry–Perot cavities, that require elaborate fabrication techniques. Here, an alternative fibre-optic ultrasound sensor is presented that comprises a simple deformable and reflective structure that was deposited using simple dip-coating. Interrogation with a laser Doppler vibrometer demonstrated how this sensor achieved a sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and noise-equivalent pressure that outperformed piezoelectric hydrophones, whilst offering a highly miniature form factor, turn-key operation, and simple fabrication. date: 2024-08 date_type: published publisher: Acoustical Society of America official_url: https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0028202 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2301668 doi: 10.1121/10.0028202 lyricists_name: Alles, Erwin lyricists_id: EJALL00 actors_name: Alles, Erwin actors_id: EJALL00 actors_role: owner funding_acknowledgements: 203145Z/16/Z [Wellcome Trust]; SBF007/100006 [Academy of Medical Sciences]; PGS19-2/10006 [Rosetrees Trust]; RF/201819/18/125 [Royal Academy of Engineering] full_text_status: public publication: JASA Express Letters volume: 4 number: 8 article_number: 082001 issn: 2691-1191 citation: Shagroun, Fadwa; Colchester, Richard James; Alles, Erwin Jozef; (2024) A fibre-optic ultrasound sensor of simple fabrication.
