The chapter argues that Malebranche gives a systematic analysis of this bodily perspective in terms of the claim that the five external senses and bodily awareness represent nothing but relations to the body. The external senses represent relations between external objects and the perceiver’s body. Bodily awareness represents relations between parts of the perceiver’s body and her body as a whole, and the way she is related to her body. The senses thus represent the perceiver’s body as standing in two very different sets of relations. The external senses relate the body to a world of external objects, while bodily awareness relates this same body to the perceiver herself. The perceiver’s body, for Malebranche, is the center of the system of relations that make up her sensory world, bridging the gap between self and external objects. date: 2019-12-19 date_type: published publisher: Oxford University Press official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198852452.003.0002 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2019603 doi: 10.1093/oso/9780198852452.003.0002 lyricists_name: Chamberlain, Colin lyricists_id: CCHAM01 actors_name: Chamberlain, Colin actors_id: CCHAM01 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public volume: IX place_of_pub: Oxford, UK pagerange: 37-74 isbn: 0198852452 book_title: Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy, Volume IX editors_name: Rutherford, Donald citation: Chamberlain, Colin; (2019) Our Body Is the Measure.
