In this chapter, the authors develop the account of causal production as information transmission which they initially presented in previous work. Specifically, in this contribution they explain the role of causal production within the ‘mosaic’ of causal theory, and how a metaphysics for causal production as information transmission is in need of a set of epistemological strategies to trace whether information is transmitted or not; such epistemological strategies can be in terms of ‘variation’ as well as ‘information transmission’. The authors explain the ‘ontoepistemological’ combination of information transmission and of variation with the aid of four episodes of causal production. date: 2024-01-18 date_type: published publisher: Oxford University Press (OUP) official_url: https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192863485.003.0007 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2252733 doi: 10.1093/oso/9780192863485.003.0007 isbn_13: 9780192863485 lyricists_name: Illari, Phyllis Kirstin lyricists_id: PKILL68 actors_name: Illari, Phyllis Kirstin actors_id: PKILL68 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public series: Oxford Academic place_of_pub: Oxford, UK pagerange: 153-174 book_title: Alternative Approaches to Causation: Beyond Difference-making and Mechanism Alternative Approaches to Causation: Beyond Difference-making and Mechanism editors_name: Shan, Yafeng citation: Illari, Phyllis; Russo, Federica; (2024) The Metaphysics and Epistemology of Causal Production: The Prospects of Variation to Trace the Transmission of Information.
