Hierarchical designs of connected levels increase the diversity of possible target structures, yet they can lead to longer folding times in the presence of fluctuations. Here, we study the effect of rotational coupling between levels on the self-folding of two-level kirigami designs driven by thermal noise in a fluid. Naturally present due to hydrodynamic resistance, we find that this coupling parameter can significantly impact a structure's self-folding pathway, thus enabling us to assess the quality of a kirigami design and the possibility for its optimization in terms of its folding rate and yield. date: 2024-01-09 date_type: published publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) official_url: https://doi.org/10.1039/d3sm01474f oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2139974 doi: 10.1039/d3sm01474f lyricists_name: Volpe, Giorgio lyricists_id: GVOLP70 actors_name: Volpe, Giorgio actors_id: GVOLP70 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Soft Matter issn: 1744-683X citation: Pecnik Bambic, Maks; Araújo, Nuno AM; Walker, Benjamin J; Hewitt, Duncan R; Pei, Qing Xiang; Ni, Ran; Volpe, Giorgio; (2024) Optimal face-to-face coupling for fast self-folding kirigami.
