First, a summary of the contextual factors influencing UK EER activity are presented. This section includes information pertaining to higher education (HE) policy, networks, and funding. Semi structured interviews are used to investigate who identifies as an engineering education researcher; how they define engineering education as a field of research; who they consider their audience to be; and the factors that inform their research questions, methodologies, collaborators and where they disseminate their work. The findings are discussed in relation to the social, political, and economic systems in which engineering education exists. The study reveals a landscape in which EER research is largely unfunded, and is primarily conducted by intrinsically motivated academics who concentrate on topics of personal interest or local context, and who do not usually collaborate or publish within journals. date: 2022-09-24 date_type: published publisher: Informa UK Limited official_url: https://doi.org/10.1080/03043797.2022.2121686 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1979524 doi: 10.1080/03043797.2022.2121686 lyricists_name: Nyamapfene, Abel lyricists_name: Wint, Natalie lyricists_id: ANYAM92 lyricists_id: NNWIN07 actors_name: Flynn, Bernadette actors_id: BFFLY94 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: European Journal of Engineering Education volume: 48 number: 2 pagerange: 1-24 citation: Wint, N; Nyamapfene, A; (2022) The development of engineering education research: a UK based case study.
