?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=School+closures+and+children%E2%80%99s+emotional+and+behavioural+difficulties&rft.creator=Crawford%2C+Claire&rft.creator=Blanden%2C+Jo&rft.creator=Fumagalli%2C+Laura&rft.creator=Rabe%2C+Birgitta&rft.description=School+closures+have+been+one+of+the+most+dramatic+consequences+of+the+COVID-19+pandemic+on+society.+Concerns+about+the+impact+of+school+closures+on+children%E2%80%99s+learning+were+raised+early+on+in+the+pandemic+and+work+continues+to+mitigate+lost+learning.+There+is+also+widespread+concern+about+the+detrimental+impact+of+the+pandemic+on+children%E2%80%99s+mental+wellbeing%2C+but+there+are+likely+to+be+a+number+of+mechanisms+at+work+here%2C+including+parents%E2%80%99+employment+situation%2C+anxiety+about+relatives%E2%80%99+health+and+social+isolation.+In+this+briefing+note+we+specifically+examine+the+role+of+school+closures+in+England+on+the+emotional+and+behavioural+wellbeing+of+children+aged+5-11%2C+as+measured+by+the+Strengths+and+Difficulties+Questionnaire+(SDQ)+in+the+UK+Household+Longitudinal+Study.+We+make+use+of+the+fact+that+in+England+certain+primary+school+year+groups+(Reception%2C+Year+1+and+Year+6)+were+prioritised+to+return+to+school+after+the+first+lockdown+from+1+June+2020%2C+while+in+other+year+groups+rates+of+return+were+much+lower+and+often+only+vulnerable+children+and+children+of+key+workers+were+able+to+attend+school.+This+allows+us+to+assess+how+emotional+and+behavioural+difficulties+changed+from+pre-pandemic+levels+for+children+who+were+prioritised+to+return+to+school%2C+compared+to+those+who+were+not%2C+after+accounting+for+ways+in+which+the+two+groups+may+differ%2C+including+age.+Data+collected+in+late+July+enables+us+to+assess+the+short+term+effect+of+missing+out+on+up+to+an+additional+six+weeks+of+schooling+%E2%80%93+on+top+of+the+schooling+all+children+missed+between+March+and+May+%E2%80%93+on+children%E2%80%99s+emotional+and+behavioural+difficulties.+Data+collected+in+late+September+allows+us+to+assess+whether+the+effect+of+these+different+school+experiences+during+the+second+half+of+the+summer+term+persists+once+all+year+groups+had+returned+to+face-to-face+teaching+in+the+new+academic+year.&rft.subject=Pandemic%2C+school+closures%2C+mental+health%2C+social+and+emotional+wellbeing&rft.publisher=Institute+for+Social+and+Economic+Research+(ISER)&rft.date=2021-03&rft.type=Report&rft.language=eng&rft.source=++++Institute+for+Social+and+Economic+Research+(ISER)+++++&rft.format=text&rft.identifier=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscovery.ucl.ac.uk%2Fid%2Feprint%2F10159856%2F1%2FSDQnote2021_final.pdf&rft.identifier=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscovery.ucl.ac.uk%2Fid%2Feprint%2F10159856%2F&rft.rights=open
