Whether the problem is best portrayed as our house being on fire (Thunberg 2019) or as our house being imperceptibly eaten away by dry rot, there is little doubt that we do indeed have a problem. Global temperatures have risen substantially, and heatwaves, hurricanes, floods, and droughts have become increasingly common. There is overwhelming evidence that these trends are, at least for a large part, caused by human activity, with increases in greenhouse gas emissions being the prime culprit (IPCC 2015). According to some analysts, we have entered a new geological era, the Anthropocene, in which humankind has become a global geological force in its own right (Steffen et al. 2011). date: 2022 date_type: published publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing official_url: https://doi.org/10.4337/9781789909432 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1962879 doi: 10.4337/9781789909432.00035 isbn_13: 9781789909425 lyricists_name: Wiertz, Dingeman lyricists_id: DWIER05 actors_name: Wiertz, Dingeman actors_id: DWIER05 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public series: Research Handbooks in Sociology place_of_pub: Cheltenham, UK pagerange: 475-492 pages: 18 isbn: 1789909422 book_title: Handbook of Sociological Science Contributions to Rigorous Sociology editors_name: Gërxhani, Klarita editors_name: Raub, Werner editors_name: De Graaf, Nan Dirk citation: Wiertz, Dingeman; De Graaf, Nan Dirk; (2022) The climate crisis: what sociology can contribute.
