We carry out an experience sampling survey deployed using a mobile application reflecting on safety and knife crime, to understand young people’s daily lived experiences. We then use the mental models approach to interview young people and police experts and construct a shared mental model which identifies mismatches between the two groups and key areas of discord related to breakdown of trust and communication. We identify gaps, misconceptions and expectations for re-establishing trust and propose strategies to tackle knife crime and improve trust between young people and the police. date: 2023-05 date_type: published publisher: SAGE Publications official_url: https://doi.org/10.1177%2F00111287211029873 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1954872 doi: 10.1177/00111287211029873 lyricists_name: Skarlatidou, Artemis lyricists_id: ASKAR74 actors_name: Skarlatidou, Artemis actors_id: ASKAR74 actors_role: owner funding_acknowledgements: EP/R044929/1 [UKRI EPSRC Network Plus] full_text_status: public publication: Crime & Delinquency volume: 69 number: 5 pagerange: 943-970 citation: Skarlatidou, Artemis; Lina, Ludwig; Reka, Solymosi; Ben, Bradford; (2023) Understanding Knife Crime and Trust in Police with Young People in East London.
