In this paper I address key issues surrounding representation, identification and erasure, and I explore some of the reasons for the systematic editing out of non-normative genders and sexualities from English language teaching. My contention is that LGBTQ erasure is a double injustice—on the one hand an injustice against LGBTQ people who are denied recognition in the curriculum and on the other an injustice against those who are not LGBTQ and who are denied the opportunity to see the world through different eyes. I conclude by offering some suggestions as to how we might redress this situation. date: 2022-03 date_type: published publisher: Japanese Association of College English Teachers official_url: https://doi.org/10.32234/jacetjournal.66.0_21 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1950704 doi: 10.32234/jacetjournal.66.0_21 lyricists_name: Gray, John lyricists_id: JGRAY79 actors_name: Gray, John actors_id: JGRAY79 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: JACET Journal volume: 66 number: 2022 place_of_pub: Japan pagerange: 21-28 pages: 7 event_location: Japan edition: 1st citation: Gray, John; (2022) 'When you don't see yourself on the page, it's harder to imagine yourself as person' - Gender and Sexuality in ELT.
