Cultural differences among international academics in the UK ispublished: pub divisions: B14 divisions: J81 divisions: B16 divisions: UCL keywords: Mobility, Internationals, Staff, Brexit, Career abstract: International mobility is an increasingly important aspect of academic careers. However, although there is a considerable body of literature that examines international mobility motivations, much less is known about the working lives of academics who move abroad. This paper analyses the academic career experiences of migrant academics in the UK, drawing on data from 27 in-depth interviews collected as part of the CGHE 3.2 project. Our findings reveal that migrant academics are not uniformly ‘strange’ to UK’s academia and its working practices. Among the main factors influencing the degree of migrant academics’ ‘strangeness’ are the country of their doctoral degree, and whether or not academics are from an Anglo-Saxon country such as US, Australia or New Zealand. These findings pave the way to considerations regarding the acculturation and integration of staff from abroad in UK universities. date: 2022-02-06 date_type: published official_url: https://rihe.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/2022/01/feb-6-2022/ oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1941625 lyricists_name: Marini, Giulio lyricists_id: GMARI76 actors_name: Marini, Giulio actors_id: GMARI76 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public pres_type: presentation event_title: RIHE Open Seminar "International Academics in a Global and Comparative Perspective: Their characteristics, work roles and contributions" event_location: Online conference event_dates: 6 Feb 2022 citation: Marini, Giulio; Pustelnikovaite, Toma; (2022) Not all foreigners are strangers.
