One particular challenge is achieving decentralised content moderation in the face of various adversaries (e.g. trolls). To overcome this challenge, many Decentralised Web (DW) implementations rely on federation policies. Administrators use these policies to create rules that ban or modify content that matches specific rules. This, however, can have unintended consequences for many users. In this paper, we present the first study of federation policies on the DW, their in-the-wild usage, and their impact on users. We identify how these policies may negatively impact "innocent" users and outline possible solutions to avoid this problem in the future. date: 2021-12 publisher: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) official_url: https://doi.org/10.1145/3485983.3494838 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1897707 doi: 10.1145/3485983.3494838 isbn_13: 978-1-4503-9098-9/21/12 lyricists_name: De Cristofaro, Emiliano lyricists_id: EDECR21 actors_name: De Cristofaro, Emiliano actors_id: EDECR21 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on emerging Networking EXperiments and Technologies (ACM CoNext 2021) pagerange: 328-335 event_title: The 17th International Conference on emerging Networking EXperiments and Technologies book_title: CoNEXT '21: Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on emerging Networking EXperiments and Technologies citation: Hassan, AI; Raman, A; Castro, I; Zia, HB; Cristofaro, ED; Sastry, N; Tyson, G; (2021) Exploring Content Moderation in the Decentralised Web: The Pleroma Case.
