However, there are complex barriers and pitfalls that must be considered before widespread real-world clinical implementation can occur. This review highlights major ethical concerns related to data privacy and sharing that are essential for the development of AI models, through to practical clinical issues such as potential patient harm, accountability, bias in decisions, and impact on workforce. Finally, current regulatory pathways are discussed, recognizing that these need to evolve to deal with unique new challenges, such as the adaptive and rapidly iterative nature of AI-based technologies, while striking a balance between ensuring patient safety and promoting innovation. date: 2020-04 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier BV official_url: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tgie.2019.150636 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1712139 doi: 10.1016/j.tgie.2019.150636 lyricists_name: Ahmad, Omer lyricists_name: Lovat, Laurence lyricists_name: Stoyanov, Danail lyricists_id: OFAHM68 lyricists_id: LBLOV52 lyricists_id: DSTOY26 actors_name: Austen, Jennifer actors_id: JAUST66 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Techniques in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy volume: 22 number: 2 pagerange: 80-84 issn: 1096-2883 citation: Ahmad, OF; Stoyanov, D; Lovat, LB; (2020) Barriers and Pitfalls for Artificial Intelligence in Gastroenterology: Ethical and Regulatory issues.
