It discusses how, during this time, understandings of reading and writing have evolved into the more nuanced notion of literacy. Further, in acknowledging changes in written communication practices, and shifting attitudes to reading and writing, the paper sketches out how families have always played some part in the literacy of younger generations; though reading was frequently integral to the lives of many families throughout the past century, we consider in particular the more recent enhancement of children’s literacy through targeted family programmes. The paper considers policy implications for promoting young children’s literacy through work with families. date: 2017-12 date_type: published official_url: https://doi.org/10.1177%2F1468798416645385 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Journal Article verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1645496 doi: 10.1177/1468798416645385 language_elements: English lyricists_name: Levy, Rachael lyricists_id: RALEV07 actors_name: Barczynska, Patrycja actors_id: PBARC91 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Journal of Early Childhood Literacy volume: 17 number: 4 pagerange: 551-569 issn: 1741-2919 citation: Nutbrown, C; Clough, P; Levy, R; Little, S; Bishop, J; Lamb, T; Yamada-Rice, D; (2017) Families’ roles in children’s literacy in the UK throughout the 20th century.
