The approach is that of translanguaging, which seeks to push the boundaries not only between different named languages but also between different modalities and across language scripts and writing systems. We base our arguments on a study of self-directed learning of Chinese via online platforms in the context of mobility and aim to demonstrate the transformative capacity of translanguaging. In doing so, we highlight the need for a transdisciplinary approach to language learning that transcends the boundaries between linguistics, psychology, and education, and in particular, the need to go beyond the artificial divides of the different modalities of language learning to strengthen the connections between research on bilingualism and multilingualism and research on language teaching and learning. date: 2018-10-03 date_type: published publisher: Cambridge University Press official_url: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0267190518000053 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Article verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1589543 doi: 10.1017/S0267190518000053 lyricists_name: Ho, Wing lyricists_name: Li, Wei lyricists_id: WYHOX24 lyricists_id: LWEIX65 actors_name: Wei, Li actors_name: Stacey, Thomas actors_id: LWEIX32 actors_id: TSSTA20 actors_role: owner actors_role: impersonator full_text_status: public publication: Annual Review of Applied Linguistics volume: 38 pagerange: 33-59 issn: 0267-1905 citation: Wei, L; Ho, WY; (2018) Language Learning Sans Frontiers: A Translanguaging View.
