It has quietly underpinned understandings of economic structure ever since. The limitations and influence of this basic breakdown have led to many critiques and extensions, but no replacements. Inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s The Urban Revolution (1968), we develop a four-sector model that replaces services with sectors focused on urbanization and control. We argue that this model is a better reflection of material economic life, and a more useful way of approaching the 21st-century economy. It also offers scholars of urbanization and regional development a creative new way of seeing urbanization. date: 2018 date_type: published official_url: https://doi.org/10.1080/00343404.2018.1464136 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Article verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1559271 doi: 10.1080/00343404.2018.1464136 lyricists_name: Acuto, Michele lyricists_id: MACUT20 actors_name: Acuto, Michele actors_id: MACUT20 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Regional Studies volume: 52 number: 12 pagerange: 1708-1719 issn: 1360-0591 citation: Schafran, A; McDonald, C; Lopez Morales, E; Akyelken, N; Acuto, M; (2018) Replacing the services sector and three-sector theory: urbanization and control as economic sectors.
