In this work, we developed a mathematical model that simulates coating spray impact, film formation and drying on pharmaceutical tablet surfaces. To describe spray impingement and liquid film formation we developed a 1-D film-spreading model. To predict the drying of the liquid film, we used the “mixture modeling” theory and the “lubrication approximation” theory to simplify the equations describing the liquid-particle system. The current model allows predicting the thickness of an evaporating coating layer applied on a curved tablet. We performed variance-based sensitivity analysis to study the effect of spray parameters on coating spreading and initial liquid film thickness and to investigate the influence of tablet and film properties on drying. date: 2018 date_type: published publisher: Elsevier official_url: https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-444-64241-7.50344-X full_text_type: other language: eng verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1513183 doi: 10.1016/B978-0-444-64241-7.50344-X lyricists_name: Christodoulou, Charalampos lyricists_name: Mazzei, Luca lyricists_name: Sorensen, Eva lyricists_id: CCHRI39 lyricists_id: LMAZZ90 lyricists_id: ESORE42 actors_name: Mazzei, Luca actors_id: LMAZZ90 actors_role: owner full_text_status: restricted series: Computer Aided Chemical Engineering publication: 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering volume: 44 place_of_pub: San Diego, CA, USA pagerange: 2095-2100 event_title: 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering event_location: San Diego, USA event_dates: 01 July 2018 - 05 July 2018 institution: 13th International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering book_title: Computer Aided Chemical Engineering editors_name: Eden, MR editors_name: Ierapetritou, MG editors_name: Towler, GP citation: Christodoulou, C; Mazzei, L; García-Muñoz, S; Sorensen, E; (2018) Modeling of spreading and drying of aqueous polymer coatings on pharmaceutical tablets during film coating.
