While much research on number development has\nexamined children's understanding of numerical concepts\nand principles, little has investigated their\nunderstanding of these symbols.\nThis thesis examines studies of understanding and use of\nnumber symbols in a range of contexts and for a variety of\npurposes. It reports several studies on the use of\nnumerals by children aged between 3 and 5 years in Nursery\nsettings in England, Japan and Sweden and their\nunderstanding of the meanings of these symbols.\n167 children were observed and interviewed individually in\nthe course of participating in a range of practical\nactivities; the activities were designed for the study and\nconsidered to be appropriate and interesting for young\nchildren.\nThe results are discussed in terms of how they complement\nexisting theories of number development and their\nrelevance to early years mathematics education."^^<http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string> .
