title: Family and nonfamily role configurations in two British cohorts
ispublished: pub
divisions: B14
note: this paper uses innovative methodology to examine the assumption of increasing destandardisation of life course patterns by comparing experiences in two UK birth cohorts born in 1958 and 1970. We examine variations in the combination of social roles during times of social change. Using a latent class approach role configurations for individuals in their early 30s are examined, establishing a typology of how work and family related roles combine within individuals born twelve years apart, and examine their antecedents. The findings suggest both consistency and change in life course patterns, and we provide empirical evidence of a dual norrmative pattern instead of a normative trend, as well as polarization and differentiation of life course across social groups, challenging the assumption that traditional social class and gender differences are losing their importance in structuring demographic events. Findings are discussed in terms of destandardisation, differentiation, and individualisation of the life course in times of social change, and their implications for family research within a life course perspective. The paper published in a high impact internationall journal. The definitive version is available at www3.interscience.wiley.com
