Catholic schools, because of what they\nare and of what they purport to be, must always be open to\nquestions of authenticity.\nOver recent years there has been a steady and subtle,\nbut very significant, increase in the role of governments in\nnon-government education in Australia, England and Wales and\nthe United States. There is concern that non-government\nschools, particularly Catholic schools, may be becoming\nunwitting and complacent vehicles of government policy,\nwhether it be a Labour government in Australia, a\nConservative government in England and Wales, or a\nRepublican government in the United States.\nThe thesis examines the nature of this government\nintervention in Catholic schools in these countries over\nrecent years, and considers whether such intervention has\nbeen antithetical to the school's capacity to develop the\npupils in a sound understanding of Catholic social justice\nprinciples. It looks at reasons why Catholic schools in\nthese countries today have difficulty reconciling their aims\nfor social justice with prevailing government's economic and\nsocial policies. It is a comparative study, to see how an\nanalysis of such developments in England, Wales and the\nUnited States can illuminate these issues in Australia. The thesis attempts to locate, evaluate and synthesise\nevidence to give a much clearer picture of the difficulties\nCatholic schools have to face in their call to evangelise\nmodern youth. The investigative method used is essentially\na historical analysis of policy documents of the Catholic\nChurch, of the popes, bishops and Catholic education bodies,\nof the governments and Courts of the countries concerned, of\nrecent statistical data, and of a series of informal\ninterviews. Visits were made to a number of Catholic\ntertiary institutions to estimate current input in terms of\nmodern Catholic social teaching.\nIn the conclusion the thesis offers strategies to\ncurrent Catholic educational administrators which may help\nimprove the effectiveness of their Catholic social justice\nteaching."^^<http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string> .
