Abstract

The International Encyclopedia of Education constitutes a single volume, comprehensive, international reference work relating to the practice and theory of education. It offers information on a wide range of educational matters, from abacus to zoning. It also provides a source of authoritative and critical commentary on major educational issues. It offers insight into specific areas of education in an interesting and informed way that is designed for both a specialised and a general readership, with original short entries contributed by over 200 specialists from around the world on around 600 different educational topics. This is a unique undertaking in the contemporary field of scholarship in education. There are many works that run into a number of volumes on specialised fields such as childhood (Fass 2004), and higher education (Clark 1992, Altbach 1991, Knowles 1977). These are each substantial contributions to the area of study concerned. The present work is a synoptic survey of a wide range of topics relating to education as a whole, and so seeks to encourage greater breadth of understanding.
