Abstract

This thesis is comprised of three parts. Part one presents a review of the literature on psychosocial outcomes associated with epilepsy, stroke and brain tumour in children. Part two presents a qualitative empirical study of how adolescents and their parents understand and manage the experience of childhood stroke. Part three is a critical appraisal of methodological and conceptual issues, focusing on six key areas relevant to the empirical study. The study presented in Part two was conducted with some collaboration with another project (O'Keeffe, 2010, unpublished doctoral thesis). All participants who took part in the study in Part two of this thesis also took part in the quantitative study conducted by O'Keeffe. The two projects were conducted separately, although there was some collaboration in terms of recruitment (Appendix F).
