Abstract

This workshop presentation builds on papers at the Cataloguing and Indexing Group Conference 2014 (Welsh, 2014), the IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section Midterm 2016 (Welsh, 2016d), and the Gladstone Umbrella 2016 (Welsh, 2016a), short communications in Catalogue and Index (Welsh, 2015; Welsh 2016b) and a research paper in Cataloging and Classification Quarterly (Welsh, 2016c) to consider the use of computational tools to analyse catalogue data as part of the Humanities researcher’s methodological toolkit. Examples are drawn from PhD research into the Working Library of Walter de la Mare (Welsh, 2017) and from early work in progress using GladCat (Gladstone’s Library, 2003- ), the reading database of the working library of Prime Minister W.E. Gladstone, to demonstrate how emerging techniques in quantitative analysis of catalogue data are being further developed to support research. This presentation showcases the repurposing of tools developed outside Library and Information Studies (including reference management software, computational linguistics apps and network analysis programs) and by LIS developers for collection management (including Library Management Systems themselves and Copac’s Content Management Tools (Copac, last accessed 2016)). Finally, it asserts that as catalogue data is the foundation of the scholarly database, the cataloguers who created the data are collaborators in the research process after (sometimes long after) they completed the cataloguing task, and the potential implications of this on practice.
