Abstract

This doctoral thesis offers a first edition, with transcriptions, translations and commentaries, of twenty-four Greek papyri from the Oxyrhynchus collection of the Egypt Exploration Society. These are known literary and documentary texts, assigned to the Roman and Byzantine periods. On the literary side, there are two sections: one with Demosthenica, four papyri of Demosthenes (orr. LVI, LVII) and four of speeches transmitted in the Demosthenic corpus but probably by Apollodoros, the son of Pasion ([Dem.] orr. XLIX, LIX); and another with two fragments of the Life of Aesop, an anonymous work of popular fiction. These editions shed light on the transmission of each text, supplementing the current picture of its history and constitution. The documentary part consists of private letters: nine of the Roman period, five of them written by women, and one with multiple recipients; and six of the Byzantine period, including four from the dossier of Viktor and Georgios, related to the Apion archive. These texts offer a wealth of information on the economy, administration, prosopography, literacy and language of the Hellenised provincial society under Roman rule, and expand our knowledge of the everyday life in Graeco-Roman Egypt.
