Abstract

The reaction of I(CH2)(2)CHCH2O and an excess of LiI with [Mo(CNMe)(CO)(2)(eta-C5H5)](-) gives crystallographically characterized cis-[MoI(CO)(2)(=C(CH2)(2)CH(CH2OH)NMe)(eta-C5H5)]. This reacts with C5H5NO to give a high yield of the gamma-lactam MeN{C(=O)CH2CH2CH(CH2OH)}. The corresponding reaction of I(CH2)(3)CHCH2O with excess LiI and [Mo(CNMe)(CO)(2)(eta-C5H5)](-) gives cis-[{Mo(CO)(2){eta(2)-C(CH2)(3)CH(CH2I)O}NHMe}] (also crystallography characterized) rather than a carbene complex.
