Abstract
A procedure is described for joining ceramic bodies before firing by applying the butt fusion welding operation frequently used for thermoplastics to ceramic suspensions. A range of values of welding parameters were explored and the particle arrangement after binder removal and partial sintering was studied microscopically in order to identify defects characteristic of the process. Although it was not possible to perfect the operation, samples were produced in which the interface of the sintered body was indistinguishable from the bulk and this means that the process is viable and worthy of development. © 1991.
