Abstract

A general expression for the decay rate of a cluster of energy E is derived using equilibrium statistical mechanics. This decay rate is independent of the vapour temperature external to the cluster. Numerical results are presented for a model in which cluster molecules interact via a square well potential. The use of a Gaussian approximation for the equilibrium cluster energy distribution leads to an inaccurate form for the decay rate.
