Abstract

X-ray diffraction analyses have been made on single crystals of [Co(picdien)(N3)](ClO4)2, [Co(picdien)(NCS)](ClO4)2.H2O, and [Co(picditn)(NCS)](ClO4)2.H2O, (picdien = 1,9-bis(2'-pyridyl)-2,5,8-triazanonane; picditn = 1,11-bis(2'-pyridyl)-2,6,10-triazaundecane) in order to see if there is any structural reason for the fact that the proton acidity of the [Co(picdien)(NCS)]2+ cation is much greater than that of the other complexes. Both NCS complexes have the anti-alpha-beta configuration and the ligand is N-bonded. The anti-alpha-beta configuration of the N3 complex is also confirmed. The strain at the central meridional amine nitrogen in the picdien complex which increases the C-N-C angle to 115-116-degrees is relieved by the larger ring size in the picditn analogues and it is suggested that this accounts for the difference in the acidity of analogous picdien and picditn complexes.
