Abstract

The slant shear test is frequently used to assess the bonding of joints in concrete construction but the information provided when the specimens fail along the joint line is not easily assimilated. When the failure is a ductile yield, Jensen employed an upper bound plastic analysis. However the restriction of a plane displacement field found in previous work severely limits ifs application and yields unlikely predictions of upper bound loads for specimens. This paper presents a graphical method of demonstrating the flow vectors in a yielding medium in the test and, following a plane stress analysis, shows the scope of upper bound solutions. In this way the importance of correctly anticipating the space of displacements at failure is demonstrated.
