Abstract

The title compounds, [K-3(dmpu)(4)](3+) [Bi(SCN)(6)](3-) (10) and [K-3(dmpu)(4)](3+) [Bi(SeCN)(6)](3-) (11) have been prepared by reaction of 'Bi(XCN)(3)' (X=S, Se) with excess dmpu (dmpu=N,N'-dimethylenepropylene urea), and crystallographically characterised. They are isomorphous and isostructural, and crystallise in the triclinic space group P-1 with Z=1: for 10, a=11.0744(10), b=11.2300(6), c=12.1519(9) Angstrom, alpha=73.207(5), beta=63.957(6), gamma=64.960(6)degrees, V=1220.3(2) Angstrom(3); for 11, a=11.2236(9), b=11.2915(13), c=12.2746(9) Angstrom, alpha=73.630(7), beta=64.100(7), gamma=64.570(8)degrees, V=1255.2(2) Angstrom(3). They contain bismuth(III) in a centrosymmetric, distorted octahedral coordination environment bonded to either six thiocyanate or six selenocyanate ligands through the sulfur or selenium atoms respectively.
