Original and only comparative study of prisoners' behaviour while in British prisons. It builds on an immense liteature on the sociology of prisons which is skillfully linked by the author with studies of females generally and held in similar institutional situations. The author gives a comprehensive account of research in the field, which is neatly presented in the form of hypotheses for testing. Some results are predictable but others are unexpected. The conclusions are often disturbing and challenging. A timeless study
