Abstract

Session abstract: it is already becoming clear that if journals continue to be published much as they are currently published the cost savings which were very much part of the argument for Open Access will not be realised. Not only are the author processing charges of many important Open Access journals increasing at way over the rate of inflation and more than subscription rates but it is probable that as research in countries such as China escalates, the steady increase of articles entering in to the publication system will begin to show a significant rise for the first time year on year – with consequent cost implications for the academic sector. Another aspect of OA rhetoric has been a promise of a re-assignment of roles in formal scholarly communication and in particular a minimisation of the role of the publisher. The model of deconstruction and reconstruction has been set out most lucidly by Raym Crow for SPARC. In this session three speakers, one a publisher and two from libraries, show how they have begun or are planning to begin an enterprise that will realise some of these ideals.
