Abstract

This article (in Spanish) explores the native category of 'cemi' (akin to 'mana' in Polynesia or 'bilongo' in Ba-Kongo) as it applies to high-valued stone rings, elbow stones and three-pointed icons. Using theories of native constructions of personhood, dividuality, animism, and multinatual perspectvism these rather enigmatic objects are endowed with new potentials for research into questions regarding native social relations with the living and ancestors and, most specifically, on the Maussean topic of gift-reciprocity, alienability-inalienability and how these impinge on the changing dynamics of political-religious power among the ancient natives of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
