Abstract

This chapter provides the most recent synthesis on the archaeological and palaeobotanical evidence relating to the history and development of aboriginal food procurement and production (agriculture) in the greater Amazon Basin in South Anmerica. The evidence is assessed in the light of the various theoretical approaches that have been invoked by various scholars to explain the rise and establishment of a varied "mosaic" of agricultural practices in Ancient Amazonia, with particular emphasis on the transition from food procurement (hunting, gathering, foraging) to agricultural food production.
