Abstract

Survey of the archaeology of Kent between the fifth and eighth centuries AD in its historical context, examining the evidence for continuity from the preceding Roman period, Anglo-Saxon settlement archaeology, the Anglo-Saxon cemetery and burial evidence with particular reference to ethnic origins (Jutes, Franks, Angles and Saxons) and the development of a distinctive Kentish material culture, the early ecclesiastical archaeology, the administrative organisation of Anglo-Saxon Kent into regions and lathes, and comments on future archaeological contributions to the study of Anglo-Saxon Kent.
