Abstract

The relationship between oxygen consumption and ATP synthesis has been investigated in freshly-prepared rat liver mitochondria and in mitochondria subjected to freezing at very low temperatures. Organelles recovered from cryogenic preservation showed an alteration in substrate-linked oxygen consumption when compared to fresh mitochondria; however ATP synthesis was not different. The results are discussed in relation to current concepts of bioenergetics.
