Abstract

This papers concerns a multi-disciplinary project carried out at the Horniman Museum in 2003: the conservation of a lost-wax casting for a brass plaque from Benin. It describes the collaboration of different departments of the museum in the project, assessments of the use and significance of this object within its current and original contexts and study of the raw material, manufacturing techniques and history of the model. Finally, the results of tests of a range of adhesives and materials to be used as fills and/or supports for objects made of wax are discussed and further research suggested.
