Abstract

This luxuriously illustrated and scholarly volume is the companion to the current (2008-2009) exhibition in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid and Santiago de Compostela) entitled "The Pre-Columbian Caribbean: Fray Ramon Pane and the Taino Universe". The book, written in Spanish (English version forthcoming) is comprised of seven analytical chapters, authored by J.P. Barbier Mueller, J. Aymar, C. Varela, J. Gil, J.R. Oliver, P. Cabello Carro and C. McEWan that examine the Columbian impact on Taino societies, the key role and contribution of the writings of Fray Ramón Pané (AD 1497)on native religion, the impact and consequences of the confrontation of Spanish Catholicism and Taino religion (cemíism), a study on the development native religion (rituals and ceremonies) and the role, meaning and significance of the religious objects of "art" (cemi) had. The two final chapters focus on the history and sociologial significance of the taino collections held in the British Museum and Museo de America. It includes an indexed catalogue of the artifacts exhibited, a bibiography, and a transcription of Panés c.1497 document.
