Abstract

This chapter, written in Spanish, examines implicaions of the encounter between the natives of Hispaniola and the Catholic missionaries led by Fray Ramón Pané (AD 1493-1500), who authored the first "ethnographic" account of the religious beliefs of the Hispaniolan natives and from an emic rather than a Hispanic perspective. Issues of active and passive native resistance (antisyncretism) as well as voluntary or forced compliance (forms of syncretism, transvaluation, acculturation)are discussed with regard to the role that sacred objects, Cathloic and native, had played in the early colonial history of the Caribbean, particularly in the contexts of military and "iconoclastic wars", a prelude toi what was to come in the Spanish conquest of the American continents.
