Abstract

This study extends research by Lea [J. Econ. Psychol. 1 (1981) 79] and Furnham [J. Econ. Psychol. 4 (1983) 349] by getting 100 British adults to estimate the size of two British coins and one note withdrawn from circulation approximately 5 years previously. Participants were very accurate at estimating the £1 note but under-estimated the size of the old 5p and 10p coins. Estimations were not linked to participant's sex, age, education or income. Implications for the design, introduction and withdraw of currency are considered. © 2003 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.
