Abstract

This paper draws on research funded by the Leverhulme Trust and by the ESRC Research Centre at IFS (grant no. M544285001). The authors are grateful to the editors and a referee for comments and to Lorraine Dearden for her advice and help with the National Child Development Study (NCDS) data. Data from the Family Expenditure Survey, made available by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) through the ESRC Data Archive, have been used by permission of the Controller of HMSO; NCDS data have been provided by the ESRC Data Archive.
