Abstract

In December 2001 CEN TC/251 confirmed a new Task Force, EHRcom, to reviewand revise the four-part pre-standard ENV 13606 relating to Electronic HealthcareRecord Communications. The intention of this work is to propose a revision thatcould be adopted by CEN as a formal standard (EN).The Task Force intends to base the revision of ENV 13606 on the practical experiencethat has been gained through commercial systems and demonstrator pilots in thecommunication of whole or part of patients? EHRs.This paper summarises reasons for seeking such a standard, outlines the parts of theexisting pre-standard , and describes the vision of EHR communication that the TaskForce proposes as its present scope. The paper also lists the key tasks that comprise itstechnical approach, and discusses some of the issues that have to be considered informulating a new and definitive standard.
