Abstract

It has long been established that the behaviour of a small vessel in a following sea is determined by the longitudinal surging and surf-riding caused by the waves. Experiments have been carried out to investigate the longitudinal forces applied by the waves to a model of a small fishing vessel. L/B and B/T were varied to investigate their effect on the longitudinal force. The results are used in a digital simulation along with propeller thrust data to predict surf-riding behaviour. From this conclusions are drawn as to the effect of hull form and propeller characteristics on surging in steep following seas.
