Abstract

A system for the surface examination of complex metal parts is described. The examination is performed by multiple sensors integrated through a blackboard architecture expert system. Defect identification is achieved through the use of neural networks, and model based reasoning. The physical sensor systems are examined, and the operations required to provide surface examination are described. These operations are implemented as knowledge sources which use the blackboard for information storage and system control.
