Abstract

The authors demonstrate the existence and the use of discontinuous statically admissible fields for cylindrical shells. These fields consist of 'lines of discontinuity' across which the membrane stress resultants are discontinuous and their relative jumps are governed by equilibrium. The lines of discontinuity crisscross the domain of the shell, with their pattern dependent on the stress resultant boundary conditions and some simple geometrical rules, thereby enabling systematic construction of statically admissible fields.
