Open access status: An open access version is available from UCL Discovery
Additional information: Gender equality in education has held a prominent position in global policy making over the last decade through international declarations such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However few studies have critically explored the role and practice of international organisations tasked with supporting the delivery of such global commitments. This paper draws on original data collected as part of the ESRC funded Gender, Education and Global Poverty Reduction Initiative project. Through a detailed analysis of interviews conducted with participants who hold a gender brief in international organisations, active in the global Education for All movement, it critically examines the ways in which global commitments to gender equality in education are being understood in policy and programme work and what this reveals about gender mainstreaming in global education organisations.
