Abstract
Travel offers the means to reach essential opportunities such as jobs, education, shops, and friends, which affect the quality of life. Lack of mobility is inextricably linked to social disadvantage and exclusion. Those lacking the resources and transport options required to travel can become deprived from interacting with the (whole extent of) opportunities offered by society. Travel by modes other than walking generally requires money. Faster modes such as the car and train tend to be more expensive than slower modes such as the bus and cycling; those who can afford these faster modes can reach a wider range of opportunities in a given time. Providing transport facilities or reducing financial (and other) barriers to travel can offer ways to address poverty, through, for example, widening the range of opportunities for employment and education that can be reached. Transport can help to reduce poverty by increasing economic efficiency and enhancing opportunities. These issues are discussed in the paper.
